Biotin is popular for many hair product formulas as it has a positive effect on hair follicles and is reputed to help baldness. One clinical study showed that 2.5 mg of biotin per day strengthened the fingernails of two-thirds of people with brittle nails. Although it seems to help with cradle cap in infants, the whole B complex is of more value in adult seborrheic dermatitis than biotin alone.

Biotin is produced by intestinal bacteria, so a biotin deficiency is rare. However, people using antibiotics on a long-term basis or who eat large amounts of raw egg whites can develop a deficiency, because the protein in raw egg whites inhibits biotin absorption.
