Selenium is an essential antioxidant mineral cofactor that is needed to recycle glutathione. Our health is directly effected by how well we recycle glutathione back into service. Optimal selenium levels in the body are associated with reduced risk of heart disease.

Selenium is a factor in the maintenance of healthy body cells and tissues and is also used for any number of conditions that are caused or exacerbated by oxidative stress.
Selenium is principally used to facilitate the formation of glutathione peroxides, which must incorporate four atoms of selenium to be active. This enzyme catalyzes the antioxidant action of glutathione in the removal of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides.
In 1980, the National Research Council in the United States established an estimated safe and adequate daily intake of selenium to be 50 to 200mcg. Subsequent investigations to ascertain the amount that would maximize plasma glutathione peroxidase activity have been set at 70 and 55 mcg for men and women respectively.
The Environmental Protection Agency concerned with environmental selenium toxicity has set the upper safe limit of selenium intake for 70 kg man at 350 mcg per day. Similarly China and the World Health Organization have set 400 mcg per day as the upper safe limit.
The RDA for pregnant and nursing women is 60 and 70 mcg respectively.
Adverse Side Effects
Selenium toxicity should not be expected in daily amounts up to 200mcg. American public health surveys carried out in seleniferous areas of the United States failed to establish any symptoms specific to selenium poisoning. Even with an average daily intake of 724 mcg amount North Dakota and Wyoming ranchers living in seleniferous areas, signs of symptoms of selenium overexposure were not observed. However, these kinds of high numbers should not be sought by those supplementing with selenium, as indicated in the next paragraph.
Selenium toxicity results in loss of hair and nails, lesions of the skin, nervous system, and possible teeth. Reported intake thresholds for these kinds of toxicity have included 750 mcg and 910 mcg.
Selenium and vitamin E work together to enhance the protection of cellular membranes from peroxidation. This is though to extend from increased glutathione redox activity on vitamin E. Similarly, glutathione is able to reduce oxidized vitamin C, which is then able to reduce membrane Vitamin E.
Because of its role in glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase, selenium probably interacts with any nutrient that affects the cellular antioxidant-prooxidant balance.
People living in seleniferour areas may be at risk of overexposure if the supplement.
There is a natural dietary intake of selenium that could be theoretically as high as 70 to 100mcg per day in conscientious plant food eaters. Therefore, supplementing more than 200mcg per day is considered to be particularly unwarranted. Unlike many mineral absorption patterns, selenium is relatively easy to absorb, and the more so when presented in organic forms, as is commonly the case in commercial supplements. The mechanism of absorption is not regulated by a homeostasis control, thus making selenium toxicity possible in the uninitiated, with up to 50 to 100 percent absorption regardless of the persons existing selenium status.
Consult a health care provider prior to use if you have a history of non-melanoma skin cancer.
